Welcome to Annotated, the Online Library of Annotated Editions

Annotated™ is a nonprofit organization whose primary purpose is to promote life-long learning by making classic literary, philosophical, and historical works accessible to the general reader. The chief means by which we seek to achieve this goal is through providing free digital editions of unabridged classic texts that have been edited and supplemented with supporting materials by recognized scholars in order to provide the reader with a more well-rounded understanding and appreciation of our culture's literary heritage.

Our overall goal is a lifelong one: to provide annotated and critical editions of our world's most influential literary texts from ancient times to the early 20th century and make them freely available online. This is a tall order, and we are a volunteer-based organization, so we need all the support we can get from donors and contributing scholars.

The Arnolfini Portrait by Jan van Eyck

"The Cask of Amontillado" by Edgar Allan Poe

She Stoops to Conquer by Oliver Goldsmith

"A Hunger Artist"  by Franz Kafka

Annotated™ is the first organization of its kind in that we crowdsource the production of our critical editions through our online literary journal, The Critical Editor. The critical edition we are currently crowdsourcing is on Charles Dickens' Barnaby Rudge (1840-1841).

Our annotated edition of She Stoops was produced by Professor J. Commander and his Southern Oregon University students, and he has included instructions for other college instructors on how to implement such an activity in their own college classrooms here. Any annotated text produced via these means will be considered for publication on AnnotatedLibrary.org.

The next annotated and/or critical editions we are currently in the process of producing are:

Barnaby Rudge by Charles Dickens - Frankenstein by Mary Shelley - The Epic of Gilgamesh

The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde - The Two Destinies by Wilkie Collins

Strange Case of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson - Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka

If there is not an edition available on our website for the text you seek, please use this form to request it and we will prioritize it accordingly. If you are a scholar and wish to contribute to an edition of a text, please use the same form. If you are interested in sponsoring a specific edition for immediate production, please contact us at annotatedlibrary@gmail.org.

Thank you for supporting our mission to make knowledge free!
